Ryan - Wednesday July 26

This mission trip truly reminds me of how privileged my day-to-day life is and how much I have taken everything I have for granted. One particular experience I had that stood out to me was when my group traveled to serve food to a local detox center for people that just want to get back on their feet and become active members of their community after falling down a slippery slope that started with just a single misstep. After having a conversation with a few of these people, I realized that they were no different than I was at my age; they were good students who did several extracurricular and had dreams of changing the world for the better. I know now more than ever that I could very easily fall down the same mountain that they did if I start going down the wrong trail, and thank God everyday that we as a society provide a means of allowing these people to get their lives back in one piece. This trip truly has set milestones for my faith as I see the light of God in many of the people I meet, and I just hope that I may be able to share that very same light with those around me someday.

Today’s most meaningful experience to me was going to the soup kitchen with Makayla, Isabelle, and Ryan. There was a group of patients there who were going through detox, and another that was coming out of prison. Ryan and I really connected with one man named Kobe who was going through detox. We talked to him about our high schools sports experiences, and I couldn’t help feeling connected. Overall, it was a great day of service.

It has been a great three days of working! Today I started off in Adrienne's house and finally got to start painting the green room, which I had been working in the pervious 2 days. At lunchtime my group went to serve food to people who are trying to get back on their feet and turn their lives around. The man who was showing us what to do, Mr. Tate, use to be one of the people staying there. It was cool to see where he started to him now working there. On the way back to Adrienne’s we stopped and got donuts! When we got back I worked on painting the living room. Overall this has been a great start to my last mission trip.

The past couple days on the mission trip have been truly a great experience. It has helped me to appreciate the privileges I have, and realize how huge of an impact my own actions can have on others. First, I started working in the “green room” which if you haven’t seen already is a room covered ceiling to floor in fluorescent green paint. I have devoted the majority of my time on the mission trip to peeling the paint off the trim of the room. But despite how hard it may seem to work on, in the end it is a very rewarding to see the transformation and how just changing the color of the room seems to make a difference in the whole atmosphere of the house. Next after making the green room not as green, my small group and I went to serve food to individuals who are making a conscious effort to change themselves for the better. I really enjoyed talking to the people and hearing their life story, also it was great to see the working to get back on their feet. After that I truly thought our journey was over as we set out back to the work sight, but that was not the case. Pastor Rob told us that we could get a snack. Then someone mentioned one of my favorite foods, donuts. To say the least my face lit up like a Christmas tree. Next thing you know we are driving down the highway with eight-dozen donuts stacked in Rob’s truck.  In the end the donuts were a great treat but not even donuts can compare to how amazing it feels helping out people in our local community of Detroit.
