Day 1 - Dave Spindler
The morning started at Homeward Bound, an organization that helps the homeless. Jim, our host, explained that they actually have 3 levels of support to help the homeless. They work to help folks get off the street and then, most importantly, stay off the streets….whether through job searches, medication help or anything else. In the last 10-years, they helped almost 1,000 folks find a home.
Although the picture doesn't look like it, it was about 90 degrees outside with brilliant sun. They needed a little help on the outside trimming bushes, weeding the front walkway and weeding a flower bed that borders that parking lot. We had a scare when someone identified some poison ivy in the flower beds but we quickly recognized the problem and everyone was not exposed/infection.
The other picture is inside the Manna Food Bank. Sarah, our host from Asheville Youth Mission (AYM) and I are evaluating food to be distributed or discarded. Unfortunately, in this pic, we're tossing out lettuce that went bad. However, the good news is that Manna will either use the discarded veggies for compost or, in the case of bread goods, hold them aside for local pig farmers. Really, nothing goes to waste.
