Finding Rest
Matthew 11:28, “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and
carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’”
Normally I find my rest in the comforts of my home, in my
bed, with my cat, my husband, and with all the things that I know and prefer.
But being away from all those things has challenged me. It has challenged me to
find my rest in God, which is easier said then done.
Being out on the job sight for 2 days now has been a
beautiful thing. Seeing how little “comforts” by my standards some of these
families have, yet seeing how they have found rest in Jesus. The first day I
got to play guitar with Scott, a resident of one of these homes. We sang
Amazing Grace and he shared the love he has for our Savior. His joy was pure
and it was clear he had learned to find rest in the arms of our Lord, even when
so much around him was chaos.
Seeing how each of our high-schoolers has sacrificed their
own comforts and preferences has been especially inspiring. The way they love
and talk with these families, the way they work to help improve the lifestyle,
even ever so slightly, for these children of God, is truly humbling. It has
shown me that you don’t have to be at home to find peace, joy, and rest. All
you need is the presence of God in your life. Nothing else matters if you have
learned to love Him, surrender to Him, and rest in Him.
So I pray that we, children of God, remember daily to find
our rest in Jesus, no matter our lifestyle, struggles, or joys; for the peace
of God is a peace that invades all circumstances.

I Need You, Matt Maher
