The only thing Barry and Emma told us before beginning our
work today was that we would be “moving a lot of dirt.” After spending two
straight days mudding corners and walls, crimping corners, painting ceilings,
and sanding non-stop, a little dirt didn’t sound too bad. However, when we
arrived at Donna’s house in a beach town called Lavalette and saw what appeared
to be a mountain, we were a little intimidated. In all honesty, I doubted our
ability to get the job done in the short 4 hours we had. We had to shovel the
dirt into the crawl space under Donna’s house through small openings in the
side of the concrete blocks. Then we had to spread it around in the hot,
stuffy, cramped, dark space with rakes so it evenly covered the ground at
around a foot deep. We rotated through each job at Donna’s house, but spreading
the dirt in the crawl space was definitely the least favorite due to the
suffocating masks we had to wear to protect us from breathing in anything
harmful. It was amazing to see how hard everyone worked to conquer the dirt
mountain, which increased the satisfaction even more when we were finished.
Donna and her boyfriend were so incredibly appreciative of all our hard work
and it was a very rewarding feeling to hear their words of thanks. When we were
thoroughly exhausted, we headed to the beach and boardwalk for a very fun
afternoon and night. To say the least, the boardwalk at Jersey Shore is quite
the interesting place.
